EP Review: VRSTY - 'Welcome Home Part. 3'

Multigenre metalcore innovators VRSTY serve up an entertaining and diverse new EP, Welcome Home Part 3.

New York-based collective VRSTY has never been your conventional metalcore experience. Since bursting onto the scene in 2015 with their profoundly self-aware Lights album, they have proven that not only can they seamlessly meld various musical genres into a single listening experience, but they are also a band with impressive instrumental grit at the back of their singular creative drive.

"Littl3 Miss Doomsday" provides a different change of pace with its diverse pop and R&B sensibilities, yet still keeps strides with VRSTY's heavier tenacity before jumping to the finale track, "The G04T." One of the most massive tracks on the EP coupled with rageful melodicism and some of the best vocal work on the whole experience, Welcome Home Part. 3 ends on a passionate gravid ending.

From there, 2019's BLCK would lead to EP Cloud City, which would create a path that would catapult them to one of their most impressive multi-genre releases, Welcome Home. Now after the release of a very personal Latin released version of Welcome Home Part 2, VRSTY serves us Welcome Home Part 3.

From the beginning, there is something dissonant and fresh to offer. Joey Varela is never one to shy away from playing with vocal harmonies, and neither is the band afraid to test the boundaries of their clever instrumental skeletons to achieve their visions—the introductory track "DE3D" is no different. Its dreamy atmospheric ambiance, shrouded in hefty riffs, fantastic gritty breakdowns, and brilliant nuances of post-hardcore turbulence, provides a perfect turning point for the following two tracks.

Each of the three songs provides a different flavor to what VRSTY is as a band. Always open-minded to the infinite possibilities within other genres and within rock and metal to create reflective moments within life, Welcome Home and its EPs have echoed all of this and more.
