Spanning from the individual growth and creative dissonance of Nate Cell, the musician has evolved to the next chapter in his life with the new Kansas City metalcore trio, Mirror Cell, and debut single, "Bleach."
Many bands are birthed from the consequences of the personal battles that one goes through to achieve peace. For Nate Cell, the mastermind of the new emerging project Mirrorcell, the concept of psychologically resetting or a rebirth physically, mentally, or chemically is one he is intimately aware of. While individual growth fostered an evolution to create something more expressive of his personality, Mirrorcell is more than just an evolution of past musical endeavors.
The message I would like people to take from "Bleach" is that you are not alone in this world. No matter how low you sink or how detached you might feel, I guarantee there is someone else out there who feels the same way you do. I implore anyone listening who struggles to reach out to family or seek help in other outlets if they struggle to find their place or meaning.
Mirrorcell's first single, "Bleach," is a compelling combination of industrial, metalcore, and shoegaze elements that draws inspiration from industry heavyweights such as Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Kittie, Portishead, and Bjork. "Bleach" delves into the notion that even in the most challenging circumstances, we are not alone in our psychological and social battles. Through unique storytelling within its raw and impassioned lyricism, "Bleach" captures the essence of the human condition and the interconnectedness that exists between us all. While Mirrorcell is just starting their journey as a new band, "Bleach" serves as the start of more music to come from the Kansas City trio.
Welcome back to Into The Void! It's great to have you here again. In our last conversation, we talked about your previous project, "Fear My Name," which we featured on this platform not too long ago. I'm excited to hear about your new project, Mirrorcell. What inspired you to start working on this?
Nate Cell: Honestly, a lot inspired me to start Mirrorcell. The main source of inspiration came from my own individual growth as a person. I feel like I have mentally changed so much since my previous project, so it felt like a good time to start something new and more expressive of my personality at this point in my life.
Can you tell me more about your musical inspirations? How did the creative process for your debut single vary from any of your previous projects? I know that Fear My Name has a unique sound and concept; here, with Mirrorcell, there are these aggressive textures, but there is also this beautiful melodic cadence sewn into those contentious structures.
Nate Cell: Our musical inspiration comes from all different kinds of sources and genres. I often find myself drawing a lot of my inspiration from 90s alternative bands like Nine Inch Nails, Deftones, Kittie, Portishead, Bjork, etc. But some modern bands I find innovative and inspiring are Code Orange, 3 Teeth, Loathe, Omerta, and more.
Your debut single, "Bleach," explores the common struggle we all encounter when trying to attain inner peace. Can you provide more details about your latest track? What was the inspiration behind this new release?
Nate Cell: "Bleach," from the listener's point of view, can be perceived in many ways. I think, at its core, "Bleach" deals with the social and mental extremities we can find ourselves in at times. Whether that be mentally struggling with PTSD or depression stemming from early on in life, as well as the struggle with chemical imbalances and physical self-love, on the flip side, you can also perceive the song as a spiritual or mental cleansing, beginning a new life separate from the pain and struggles that may have lingered before from something or someone.
Is "Bleach" opening the door for something bigger in the future? Can we expect an EP or an album in the future?
Nate Cell: You can 100% expect more after this release. We have a plethora of material both alike and completely different from "Bleach" that we plan to release very soon after our debut.
When an artist puts their creation out into the world, it's ultimately up to them what they take from it at that point, but if there is any message that you hope people take from this single, what would it be?
Nate Cell: The message I would like people to take from "Bleach" is that you are not alone in this world. No matter how low you sink or how detached you might feel, I guarantee there is someone else out there who feels the same way you do. I implore anyone listening who struggles to reach out to family or seek help in other outlets if they struggle to find their place or meaning.
Also, tell someone close to you that you may know who struggles with mental health issues that you love and appreciate them. Or just simply ask them how they are doing. You never know when someone could use that kind of reassurance or human connection in their life.
What can we expect from you guys moving forward?
Nate Cell: I like to keep our next moves as a band vague. But what I can say is that this year will be very eventful for Mirrorcell. And any new fans will have a lot of content to consume for the rest of this and next year.
