New Hampshire metalcore band In Shallows releases a fun, aggressive, and dynamic new cover of Post Malone's "Hollywood's Bleeding," showing a multifaceted side to their sound.
In Shallows has proven a lot this past few years with their latest 2021 EP release of Beneath The Surface. While the hard-hitting EP demonstrated that the independent metalcore band has potential for so much more in the future, sometimes you need a bit more frosting on the brownies to show you are more than your previous sound has achieved so far.
"It was definitely a learning curve but, it pushed us to try something new and exciting as a band. Covering a song isn’t as easy as we initially thought since we wanted to do the track justice and make sure that we didn’t stray too far from the original sound. Doing this song, it’s given us confidence and has most importantly shown us our artistic capabilities. As a group, we can take away a sense of accomplishment and a feeling that we’ve grown as musicians."
The New Hampshire natives have delivered a taste of this with their new cover single, Post Malone's, "Hollywood's Bleeding." Showing a more vibrant and versatile take on In Shallows' sound than what we have heard in previous releases, In Shallows is showing this fun, aggressive, and dynamic step forward for the future of their sound.
What made you guys want to work on this Post Malone's "Hollywood's Bleeding?"
We’ve always enjoyed cover songs by other metal bands and collectively thought this one would be perfect to put our twist on. We were specifically looking for more of a fun summer release song, where we could show our diversity as a band while stepping out of our comfort zone. It seemed like the right direction to cover this one in hopes of gaining new listeners to follow up our EP release of, Beneath the Surface. Once we all sat down and listened to Hollywood together, the ideas started flowing where we could add our own flavor. It’s always a fun time brainstorming with the guys and feeding off each other to make the process more enjoyable.
What was the creative process like working on this cover compared to other tracks you have worked on previously?
As this is our first cover, we were stepping into the unknown by transforming another artist’s music into our own sound. We learned that it’s difficult, but the nice part was the framework and lyrics were already there. Unlike writing our songs where we have complete artistic control; this cover had to sound like something we’d create, but also still sound similar to the original. Once we got rolling on where screams and breakdowns were going to come in, we knew this song was the right choice for us.
What are you guys hoping to show this cover to fans and other listeners?
The main goal was to show fans and listeners that we can take something from an entirely different music genre and make it sound like an In Shallows song. We hope to draw attention to our music, which listeners might not have heard before hearing this cover. It was also an opportunity for us to show a different “rap style” which we may feed off in our new upcoming material later this year in the studio.
What have you guys taken away from doing this cover?
It was definitely a learning curve but, it pushed us to try something new and exciting as a band. Covering a song isn’t as easy as we initially thought since we wanted to do the track justice and make sure that we didn’t stray too far from the original sound. Doing this song, it’s given us confidence and has most importantly shown us our artistic capabilities. As a group, we can take away a sense of accomplishment and a feeling that we’ve grown as musicians. We’re super proud of this one and hope to carry the momentum into the next one!
You guys are planning on going on tour soon. Are we going to hear about upcoming dates soon?
As a group of guys with full-time jobs and different schedules, we’ve just been trying to keep getting together for practice sessions and write new material as often as we can. It would be awesome to fit touring into our schedules eventually, we’re hopeful for that one day. As of right now, we’ve been pushing to book more local shows as the year progresses. We recently announced that we’d be playing at the Jewel in Manchester, NH on July 17th with RVNT, Exitwounds, and some other awesome bands. Other dates will be announced later this year as we look to keep ourselves busy on stage.
What else can we expect from you guys this year?
One thing’s for sure, we’ll be stepping out of the shallows to bring a high-energy performance to a stage near you as soon as possible. We’re working on new material and always looking forward to the next opportunity to build this band. As a whole, we’re looking forward to seeing the fans that have helped us grow into what we are now and hopefully make a few more along the way.
